- With Apple’s Vision Pro headsets, new iPhones with the ability to record to record spatial-based video, and newer cameras from Insta360 (including the X3, which will be available at the workshop), Harauz says this unique type of filmmaking is becoming more of a business and less of an experiment.

In a video interview (above), he recounts his own, and the industry’s, evolution since the watershed moment when GoPro introduced Odyssey, a 16-camera 360 rig the sports camera company developed with Google.
“That was one of the first workshops that we held,” he recalls. “and I’ve seen that industry shift from that time, which people originally referred to as the ‘Wild West’ to where VR, AR and 360 productions are today.”
He points out that with Apple’s much-discussed Vision Pro headsets, new iPhones with the ability to record to record spatial-based video (a form of 360 video), and newer cameras from Insta360 (including the X3, which will be available at the workshop), this unique type of filmmaking is becoming more of a business and less of an experiment.
Likewise, the growth of post tools to stitch, manipulate and edit 360 material has also contributed to this evolution, and he plans to provide a solid lesson to attendees in many such features in NLEs including Adobe Premiere Pro, Blackmagic Design Fusion (within Resolve) and Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Insta360 Studio, now in its V4.6.0 release, with its own proprietary iPhone app for their content.
“We’ll also look at some higher-end workflows,” he promises, such as using MochaVR from BorisFX within Adobe After Effects to perform roto type effects within 360 content and apps such as 3dvista’s to create virtual tours and prep 360 footage for creating interactive experiences.
Harauz talks about apps such as 3dvista to create virtual tours and 360 content and actually mark certain portions of your footage to allow for interactive video. They make 3DVIsta Stitcher 4, Virtual Tour Pro and hosting services optimized for this kind of content.
The use of 360 video for applications such as headset-based real estate tours and many other types of production, he says, “is becoming more and more prevalent.”
No longer the “Wild West,” this type of work has become much more mainstream, Harauz says, and as more people access newer and cooler headsets, the entire field promises to further expand significantly in the coming year.
